Exhibition Branding & Graphics

I collaborated with the Bachelor of Arts, Design department chair & exhibition designer for FIDM’s BA Design Student Exhibition. The objective was to create a sense of movement throughout the exhibition to represent the graduating students’ creative process and growth. To achieve this goal, I conceptualized a subway map theme that guided viewers through the exhibition. The use of arrows directed visitors towards white circular "stops" strategically placed along the route. These stops served as focal points, displaying the names of the student in front of their respective pieces. The bars in each room had their own unique color. This design choice added another layer of movement, creating a dynamic visual experience for visitors as they traveled from one room to the next. In the bubbly water label design for the opening reception, each color represented a different flavor. Additionally, three rows of arrows indicated sweetened options, while one row represented unsweetened choices.

2024 Art of Costume Design in Film

In 2023 Arizona State University acquired the FIDM Museum and renamed it the ASU FIDM Museum. I was fortunate to be invited to create the branding and exhibition graphics for ASU FIDM’s first exhibition—The Art of Costume Design in Film. The opening of the exhibition was an important event for ASU’s new Los Angeles campus, so the challenge was to keep the look unique for the exhibition while honoring the ASU brand. I referenced the ASU brand typefaces as a starting point then took the typography in a playful direction integrating ligatures and a thread motif. The thread became the unifying graphic used throughout the exhibition and serves as a subtle map to move viewers through the exhibition while visually referencing a material very familiar to all costume designers.

Branding and Exhibition Graphics for FIDM Museum’s 2023 Art of Costume Design in Film Exhibition. The logo’s interlocking color blocks were inspired by the clusters of gold blocks that the exhibition design director utilized throughout the space. I picked up on the motif and brought some pops of color to the branding to reflect the rich colors of the costumes. I adapted the color block theme for the graphics throughout the exhibition and in the promotional pieces including the poster, social media, invitations, web graphics, and more.

B.A. in Design Student Exhibition

Logo, poster, signage, email, and social media design for exhibition. I worked closely with the B.A. Design department head and exhibition designer to create the branding for the show. The logotype is hand drawn and influenced by the exhibition design which featured curvilinear forms and quirky color combinations. The high contrast images of the designers were treated with two ultra pigmented colors overlapping to create a third unexpected color.

FIDM Museum Outdoor Banners

The FIDM Museum asked me to design a “modern, clean, and colorful” look for their outdoor banners and interior signage. I designed a system utilizing the strong silhouettes of a few of the pieces from the museum’s collection including a 1970s platform boot, a 1960s pair of cat-eye sunglasses, and a pair of long evening gloves from the 1950s. I wrote the tagline FASHION LIVES HERE and placed inside the teardrop shape that serves as a way finder pointing toward the building. The arrow is flipped when it’s on the opposite side of the light pole.

The imagery is featured on a 30’ long entrance wall to the exhibition. I adapted the imagery for use in promotional materials for the exhibition including posters, signage, emails, multi-media, exhibition text, and social media. The exhibition was featured in The Hollywood Reporter and in The Los Angeles Times.

Branding and Exhibition Graphics for the FIDM Museum’s 28th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design. The imagery showcases a striking costume designed by Ruth Carter for Black Panther, and is featured on the 30’ long entrance wall of the exhibition. The golden color is a nod to the Oscar® statuette and the contemporary deco style typography celebrates a new “golden age” of film. I adapted the imagery for use in promotional materials for the exhibition including the poster, email and social media.

2020 Art of Motion Picture Costume Design

The FIDM Museum asked me if I could create a poster and a set of coloring post cards to accompany their traveling exhibition of Sporting Fashion: Outdoor Girls 1800–1960. I illustrated the cover image and created the line drawings for the coloring book pages. It was such fun studying the photos of the garments and creating the cover illustration and the line art for the coloring plates. It gave me a renewed appreciation of the work that went into making these stunning pieces.

I designed a digital companion guide for the Sporting Fashion Exhibition. As you walk through the galleries, you can find out more about your favorite ensembles, accessories, and props on your phone. A selection of ensembles in the guide are presented here.
